Lobster-roll-a-thon: Lobster Shack

(download)
Over the years of traveling to my parents' house in southern Maine I've become enamored with lobster rolls. I like lobster in almost every form, with perhaps lobster ravioli being the only thing at the bottom of the list. But sit me in front of a plate of steamed lobster, grilled lobster, baked-stuffed lobster, lobster cocktail, lobster diavolo, lobster tarragon, lobster bisque, lobster stew... just about anything lobster-related and I'm a happy eater. But a lobster roll is perhaps one of the most enjoyable - in the sense that its a super-fast way to enjoy fresh, and refreshing, lobster meat. So it is with great anticipation that I write this first Lobster-roll-a-thon review of some of my favorite spots in southern maine. First up, the Lobster Shack in Perkins Cove, ME.

Price: $14

Bun: Just about everyone in Maine understands the buttered and grilled bun and the Lobster Shack's was absolutely perfect.

Lobster solo: Perfectly cooked, but it was predominantly the "stringy" lobster pieces with just a few chunks of meat. Kinda disappointing.

Finxins: Heavier on the mayo than I remembered or really like, but I love that they do nothing else to it. Just mayo.

Overall: I left  disappointed because I recalled this as being one of my favorite local joints. My folks live a short stroll from the shack, and I've been there so many times over the years. But this time around I thought there was more mayo than in previous years, and not enough substantial meat. I did notice they have a "double the meat" roll on the menu now for $20, so perhaps they have adjusted their approach with a cheaper/smaller roll for the average diner... we are in a recession after all, right? I should ask them about it.... the more I think about it I'm pretty sure this roll used to be $16... so this is making at least a little sense.  For now I'm going to move on to some other joints, and maybe try the mega roll on our last night here... I'm hoping the Lobster Shack regains their form as one of my favorites. As an aside, the chowder was great,  the steamers were perfect., and the Shipyard export went down without issue.
